I may be missing some criteria here. So, there I was, only allowed to have one child and only allowed to have this one child by this one, specific sim. She wished for a boy (and so did I hehe) Throughout the pregnancy she ate nothing, absolutely nothing but apples. She had a girl. I’m wondering if the LTR of hardly hungry had something to do with it or was this just a complete miss. The girl is awesome btw. I can’t wait to see what happens next. But, idk what went wrong there.
@Amoara, it’s possible the LTR may have had some effect. This is what Carl’s Guide says: ‘A Simple Cheat for Choosing the Gender of the Baby: For Having a Boy Eat Apples or Eat Watermelons to Have a Girl. The second ‘pregnancy cheat’. Before a Sim is visibly pregnant, you should have them eat one of two fruit in order to have the baby be a boy or girl. If you want to have a boy, eat apples. For having a girl baby, eat watermelons. Head to the supermarket and buy the chosen fruit. Buy about ten, that should do the trick. Have your pregnant Sim eat all 10 of them (click the little arrow on the apple icon to queue up individual apples). This is the only way to choose between boy or girl, as there are no console cheats to affect pregnancy.’ Also, note that it says ‘before a sim is visibly pregnant’, so timing is also important.
Ah, well I did buy quite a few apples but only managed to eat a few during the time of pregnancy. I don’t believe I ate either apples or watermelons prior to the visible signs. Thanks for that info! Definitely the LTR there. Very good to know.
I should maybe clarify, that as soon as I heard the ‘chimes’ of pregnancy, she ate nothing but apples, but like I said, I’m certain that ltr was the culprit because she, obviously, hardly ate.
I think if you have a lot of males in the neighbourhood it can sometimes effect what gender baby you have. I also seem to have boys no matter how many watermelons my sim eats. But I have a bad habit of making female sims and leaving them in my bin…
In an unmodded game, it doesn’t matter when you start eating fruit or how many of a gender is in your neighborhood already. The trick will work as long as you eat enough fruit.
Basically, look at sirguylittle’s quote from Carl’s guide and ignore the part about your expectant mother needing to do it before showing. Though it’s not like eating them beforehand will hurt either.
If the trick isn’t working, the problem is either:
• You’re not having your sim eat enough fruit during their pregnancy. The number passed around is usually 3 apples or watermelons, but the number is closer to 10.
• You have Twallan’s Story Progression installed and the gender of babies set to “Balanced.” The need to balance the genders in town overrides the fruit trick. It’s under Options: Pregnancy -> Newborn Gender. Changing it to “Random”/whatever setting just picks the gender arbitrarily will allow the trick to work.
• In very, VERY rare circumstances, your game is being weird/buggy. I’ve heard of precisely one person playing an unmodded game, having their expectant mother eat 20 watermelons for a girl, and they still got a boy out of the deal.
I recall that someone somewhere along the line did some in-depth experimenting and found that the fruit trick works, barring other things getting in the way such as listed above, from the chimes at conception through the end of the first two trimesters of pregnancy. For a standard unmodded length pregnancy, that would be the first two sim days. Sims start showing at the beginning of the 2nd day so there is some considerable overlap there. But any extra vitamin C consumed sounds more healthy than harmful in any event.
I always made my sims eat either three apples or watermelons after the bump was visible and always ended up with the gender of my choice.
